Fern came to us from an overcrowded shelter in St. Thomas. One of our wonderful volunteers hand-picked her from the shelter! What a lucky girl! She had been on the streets for 2 months and was in a shelter for 3 months - the poor thing.
We're just guessing at breeds - she is a typical island dog with a lean body and big upright ears! She has a white chest and cute speckled feet.
Fern bonds quickly and is a fun companion - always interested in what you're doing and wanting to join in.
Fern is very playful with other dogs. She's been great with big and small dogs in her foster home. She loves to chase and be chased, and she plays a lot with her paws. She also likes to cuddle with other dogs!
Fern is a good player, and enjoys water bottles, stuffed animals, and balls. She is not possessive over her toys or food, but since she eats so quickly, we feed her in her own crate. She can very politely take treats in a crowd of dogs.
Fern knows "sit", and she is an expert at using the doggie door!
Fern loves to go for rides in the car, and she is very calm and well-behaved. She is enjoying her walks with her foster family.
Fern is crate trained, and she's been great with her housetraining skills.
Fern arrived with few social skills - she was afraid of people and skittish. She is improving every day, and is very friendly to people now. Sometimes she is startled when someone comes into a room, and she'll bark at them til she recognizes them. We do notice that she seems to bond more with women than some men. She doesn't seem to bond with men who are loud or yell at her (well, who would?). She still is overcoming her fears, and as a slightly shy dog, needs a gentle, nurturing touch.
We'd like her to go to a home with another dog who can help to continue to show her that people can be trusted.
If you are interested in Fern, please go to www.wagoninn.rescuegroups.org , and under website features click on forms/applications to fill out an adoption application. We'll be in touch soon. Thank you!
